Social Sciences Honor Society Inducts New Members

20 CCU students participated in Coastal in Tuscany education abroad program
The Coastal in Tuscany faculty-led program is a repeating program that allows students the opportunity to learn about Italian language and culture over the course of three weeks in May. Twenty Coastal Carolina University students participated in the program this past Maymester. The program is based in Arezzo, Italy, one of Tuscany's most scenic and historic walled cities. As a historical site, Arezzo dates back to the Iron Age and became an Etruscan center of considerable importance during the period prior to the establishment and expansion of the ancient Roman Republic. The city's continued cultural heritage is manifest in noteworthy Roman, medieval and Renaissance architectural and artistic sites and objects. Coastal's program is based at the Accademia dell'Arte's Villa Godiola in Arezzo, an American artistic and educational center that provides housing, classroom space, support services, and meals. During their stay in Arezzo, students become familiar with Italian social and other practices of daily life, including travel, dining out, shopping and more.

23 CCU students inducted into Sigma Tau Delta English honor society
Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honor society, was founded in 1924 at Dakota Wesleyan University with more than 900 active chapters located in the United States and abroad. They have more than 1,000 faculty advisers, and approximately 9,000 members inducted annually. Among those members inducted this year were 23 Coastal Carolina University students. Candidates for undergraduate membership must have completed a minimum of two college courses in English language or literature beyond the usual requirements in freshman English. The candidate must have a minimum of a B or equivalent average in English and in general scholarship, must rank at least in the top 35 percent of his/her class, and must have completed at least three semesters or five quarters of college course work.

More than 760 students named to President's List for Spring 2019
Nearly 770 Coastal Carolina University students were named to the President's List for the Spring 2019 semester. To be named to the President's List, students must achieve a 4.0 grade point average (GPA) for the semester. CCU has a student body of 10,600. More than 2,000 students were also named to the Dean's List for the spring semester, which means more than 21 percent of the student body earned recognition on either the Dean's List or the President's List. Of those on the President's List, 141 are freshmen, 177 are sophomores, 166 are juniors and 285 are seniors.

Six CCU students inducted into women's and gender studies honor society
Six Coastal Carolina University students were inducted into Iota Iota Iota this past spring semester. Iota Iota Iota (Triota), is a national women's studies honor society with more than 50 chapters nationwide. The purpose of Triota is to promote interest in women's studies, and research in social problems affecting all women. This society also encourages volunteerism, advocacy and activism within the community as important methods for promoting and maintaining the feminist values central to women's studies.

More than 1,200 graduate as part of CCU's Class of 2019
Coastal Carolina University graduates are exactly what the world needs, according to commencement speaker and doctoral candidate Leigha Peterson. Peterson addressed the graduating class of 2019 - more than 1,200 students - during three separate commencement ceremonies at the HTC Student Recreation and Convocation Center May 10-11. "Whatever you are, put it out there," she said, "because it is better than good enough. It is exactly what the world needs!"

CCU Honors Class of 2019 is the largest yet
The Coastal Carolina University Honors Class of 2019 is the largest in history, with 83 graduates earning a total of 89 degrees. Each student has completed a rigorous curriculum consisting of at least 24 credit hours of honors courses while maintaining at least a cumulative GPA of 3.5. The average GPA of this spring's graduating class is 3.72. Each honors student also completes a final honors thesis or project which is presented in a public forum.

Dozens of sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students at Coastal Carolina University were inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma on April 2. Beta Gamma Sigma is the international business honor society accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

CCU students perform in wind ensemble
Twenty-eight Coastal Carolina University students performed in the music department's wind ensemble concert on Friday, April 26, in Wheelwright Auditorium. The performance featured an "American sounds, American voices" theme through seven different songs. The ensemble was under the direction of Garrett Griffin, associate professor of music and director of bands.

Coastal Carolina University held two commencement ceremonies on Dec. 14, and more than 700 students were eligible to participate. Ceremonies were held at 2 and 6 p.m. in the HTC Student Recreation and Convocation Center. Barbara Blain-Bellamy, mayor of Conway, S.C., was the speaker.

Twenty-eight students in the Delta Zeta Chapter of Eta Sigma Gamma, the Public Health Honor Society at Coastal Carolina University, hosted a health and hygiene drive to collect items and raise awareness about the homeless population in Horry County.

Fifteen students were accepted into the Call Me Mister program at Coastal Carolina University for the Fall of 2018. The Call Me Mister programs aims to assist with the recruitment, training, and certification of elementary teachers from disadvantaged communities who are planning to teach in South Carolina schools, especially in the lowest performing elementary schools.

CCU Wind Ensemble performs classic river songs
Forty Coastal Carolina University students will perform in the Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Garrett Griffin, assistant professor and director of bands for the Department of Music. The performance is on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 7:30 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium. The concert includes six pieces, including traditional American river songs like "Shenandoah" and "Down the River."

CCU welcomes its 2020 cohort of Wall Fellows
Coastal Carolina University welcomes nine students to its Class of 2020 Wall Fellows, a two-year program that prepares top students across all majors for high-level careers in major U.S. and international organizations. The highly selective leadership development program is designed to supplement students' regular academic coursework. Along with coursework, the Wall Fellows program also consists of a combination of individual reading and studying, developing a personal mission statement and resume, professional internships, leadership training, project execution and character-building opportunities.

Coastal Carolina community service club inducts 15 new members
The Rotaract Club at Coastal Carolina University welcomed 15 new members this month. The Rotaract Club is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Carolina Forest-Sunrise in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Club members participate in an array of community service events, from road cleanups to donation drives.

Newly established Honors College at CCU has more than 700 students
The HTC Honors College and Center for Interdisciplinary Studies was established at Coastal Carolina University on Oct. 12, and the 700 students who had been accepted into the University's honors program are now the first students housed in the new college. The HTC Honors College and Center for Interdisciplinary Studies will feature many new initiatives and a revised curriculum. It will support students who have ties to majors and departments across campus: from honors students to interdisciplinary studies students, who build their own, innovative academic majors. In addition, the college will continue to support and advise undeclared first-year students as they select and transition into their major.

CCU welcomes its 2018-2019 cohort of CoBE Institute associates
Coastal Carolina University welcomes its 2018-2019 cohort of junior associates in the CoBE Institute. The Community and Business Engagement (CoBE) Institute, housed within the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration, is a student-led organization pairing high-achieving undergraduate business students with business consulting projects to give them workplace experience. Students selected as CoBE Associates will receive instruction, mentoring and a unique opportunity to gain valuable work experience through participating in real-life business projects, commonly referred to as consulting practicum experience.
